Scavenger Mealtime Treasure Hunt

by Judith

Yes, it’s time to do something different with your mealtimes.
Yes, it’s a mealtime treasure hunt. It’ll lift the energy in your house.
Yes, it’ll take a little bit of planning and it’ll be worth it.

The children are irritable.
You’re irritable.
You wonder how this day is going to end…
No. More. Arguments.

Once you announce that you’re having a mealtime treasure hunt spirits will lift, the energy and dynamics will totally change.

The idea is that you prepare separate courses and hide them. Provide clues in the normal treasure hunt way for them to find one course at a time.

You’ve got fun, food and problem solving all rolled into one!

Decide how many courses – will it be two or three courses?
Write five to ten clues per course.

The first set of clues might lead them to a box covered by a rug hiding in a cupboard, which has small pots of fresh fruit in it. Everyone lays out the rug, sits on it, eats the first course before moving onto the next clues. These lead them to collect items for the next course, including collecting mum or dad so they can take out the hot snacks from the oven. On the kitchen side or on a table they’ll find a box or a basket filled with (paper) plates, glasses, juice and napkins.

The next set of clues lead them to a pile of folded pyjamas – ready to put on – the next clue sends them to change into them (and to put their clothes away too!) before following the next clue. The last clue might send them to the sitting room where you’ve left an ice cooler box with ice lollies for them to eat. A fantastic time to read a book together! The children have had their food, fun and problem solving and the bonus is they are ready for bed!

There are huge possibilities in tailoring this treasure hunt. You may decide to use clues that lead to individual ingredients for cake making for a fun afternoon of goody making, directions for a walk or a cycle ride. Once you’ve unleashed your creativity — there’ll be no stopping you.

Let me know about your (wildly successful) treasure hunts in the comments below. I’d love to hear.
