Are you behaving like a boiled frog?

by Judith

A strange question I grant you. Bear with me.

What have you got used to in your family?
And… you don’t realise you have got used to it!

The boiled frog story goes something like this:
If you put a frog in hot water it’ll jump out straight away, however put it in tepid water and raise the temperature very gradually – the frog stays in the water because it’s gradually acclimatising itself to its surroundings – until it dies! :( so the story goes.

This metaphor has huge relevance in parenting!

Because you’re doing what you’re doing on a daily basis you don’t always recognise the incremental changes that are happening within your family. It’s so gradual. You may become stressed, frustrated and uncomfortable in the process. This is now your new normal.

Before you became a parent I bet you loved your beautiful, uninterrupted, luxurious eight hours of sleep a night! You didn’t think you could operate and function on anything less.
Fast forward to now – you’re operating and functioning on waaaaaay less than eight hours sleep a night. You’ve got used to it (unfortunately) and it’s your new normal. Sleep deprivation is not a good thing!

The situations in your family have changed so slowly over a period of time, you don’t even recognise it yourself or the situations. You’ve become acclimatised to these situations. This is now your new normal. You don’t recognise that you can jump out of the metaphorical water at any time. You don’t recognise that you really need to jump out. For your sanity.

Does this ring any bells with you?

Hop on over and book your free call here and I’ll help you jump out of the water towards a better new normal.

Brilliant metaphor there Judith. I’ve been making a real effort to increase my sleep each night and to identify habits that we’ve slipped into as a family that are maybe not so beneficial to us.

Hi Rachel, thanks for leaving your comment. Fantastic news on you increasing your sleep each night – it’s so vital to our well being! Just because you get used to less doesn’t mean it’s good.
It’s really good to take one or two steps back to identify the ‘stuff’ you’ve slipped into and that are NOT beneficial to you! You wonder when it all started to happen…
Let me know how you get on. :)
