Are you addicted to Facebook?

by Judith

Being online is fantastic, connecting and using Facebook is wonderful too. You use it as a marketing tool, a way of connecting and a place to socialise. There’s a big, wide world out there waiting.

Have you thought about how much time you (really) spend on Facebook?
Have you thought you might be just a teensy weensy, little bit addicted to Facebook?
Have you thought – who’s in charge of your life? Is it you or Facebook?

1. Wake up early. I know what you’re like — the alarm’s gone off ten minutes earlier so you’ll have the time to get well and truly organised before the children get up. You hear the Facebook pinging noise on your phone, which is conveniently by your bed. You’ll have a very quick look, even though you’re still snuggled up in bed, and you won’t be long. It might just be very important. You look at the clock and all your early to rise good intentions have slid down the pan. You’re late!
Or
Perhaps you’re on Facebook whilst waiting for the kettle to boil and doing lots of other jobs. Good old multi tasking! The bottom line is that you’re not really achieving anything. You feel you are, but really, you’re not.

2. Backed up. The mornings are an oh-so tight manoeuvre and any curved ball can send you and the morning routine into a tailspin. You’re late. You’ve still got stuff to do before you leave the house. You shout. You snap. You’re rushing around. The children are rushing around. Items cannot be found! You still find time to check your phone!

3. Stressed. These demanding circumstances can produce tension. Your stress levels have risen five notches already. Tension in the morning doesn’t aid a swift and calm exit from the house. You want your children to hurry up, they’re ‘dragging’ their feet, so you tell them again, and again, and again. You’re becoming more frazzled and frustrated by the minute.
It’s not even the children’s fault you’re all running late! Big ah-ha moment clicks – just about now!
You just have to answer that message…

4. You can’t stop checking. Even when you’re out and about you can’t resist taking sneaky little peaks at Facebook to see if you’ve got any comments or messages. It might be important after all. You don’t want to miss out! You even check and spend time online on your lunchtime, so you don’t actually get a break either. What started off as ten minutes catch up time has turned into a huge time sucking monster.

5. Exhaustion. At the end of the day, you’re so exhausted you can’t do another thing or keep you eyes open for another minute yet you’re still on Facebook checking your newsfeed, posting and connecting so you don’t miss out.
So, back to my original question of – who’s in charge of your life? Is it you or Facebook?

Notice when and how long you are on Facebook. Once you really know, (you may surprise yourself) you can do something about it!

Thanks Michelle, you did make me giggle with your response! There are levels of addiction too…
Given that you make your living on Facebook, where might you be on a scale of 1 -10? 10 being total addiction!
